Phyllis Hummel
Civil War Period Guitar
Phyllis Hummel's
search for understanding of the
Civil War period in American history began back
in 1983. She and her family had visited the 125th anniversary of the battle of
Gettysburg, which resulted in her plunging headlong into the reenacting hobby. Not content with just reenacting and
reading about the Civil War, Phyllis began to learn about the music of the
period, focusing on songs relating to the soldiers' life and songs of "hearth and
home".
Her music
wonderfully describes the dynamic events of the era.
Her musical presentations will take you back in time as she plays her
guitar and sings of the "Vacant Chair," and the soldier who has gone off to war
to fight for his country. You will envision yourself seated by the campfire as the
weary soldier asks: "Do They Miss Me at Home?" You will imagine walking the halls of the
battlefield hospital as she
sings of "Somebody's Darling" who will never go home again. And her
stirring "Rally 'Round the Flag" will have you marching along with the soldiers.
