Civil War Period Guitar

Phyllis Hummel's search for understanding of the Civil War period in American history began back in 1983. She and her family had visited the 125th anniversary of the battle of Gettysburg, which resulted in her plunging headlong into the reenacting hobby. Not content with just reenacting and reading about the Civil War, Phyllis began to learn about the music of the period, focusing on songs relating to the soldiers' life and songs of "hearth and home".

Her music wonderfully describes the dynamic events of the era. Her musical presentations will take you back in time as she plays her guitar and sings of the "Vacant Chair," and the soldier who has gone off to war to fight for his country. You will envision yourself seated by the campfire as the weary soldier asks: "Do They Miss Me at Home?" You will imagine walking the halls of the battlefield hospital as she sings of "Somebody's Darling" who will never go home again. And her stirring "Rally 'Round the Flag" will have you marching along with the soldiers.

  Rachel Hummel Stanford

Civil War Period Violin

Phyllis' daughter, Rachel Hummel Stanford, began taking violin lessons when she was in first grade and has been studying the violin for the past sixteen years. She joins with her mother in bringing you this nostalgic musical presentation. The haunting Civil War melody of "Ashokan Farewell", the theme of the Ken Burns Civil War PBS Series, is a particular favorite of hers, and one of the many she will share with you.

Phyllis' and Rachel's repertoire also includes a variety of sacred music and Irish folk tunes. Both mother and daughter have been singing and playing in church services for many years and are widely sought after for weddings.  For more information on the music of Phyllis Hummel and Rachel Hummel Stanford, email Phyllis Hummel directly, or contact the Macungie Historical Society at 610-965-0372.
